Fertile Ground: Fertility Awareness and Natural Family Planning for Contraception and Conception

This is not about counting the number of days from your last period until you think you're "safe,” or
using a 14-day ovulation estimate when trying to conceive.  Systems that rely on guessing don't work...the Fertility Awareness  Method does.

The Fertility Awareness Method is an effective, research-based method of determining when fertility
occurs within a woman's menstrual cycle.  This information can be used to plan and/or prevent
pregnancy, or simply to learn more about your body's cycles and health.  Learn to observe, interpret, and record the key fertility signals of your cycle -  waking body temperature, cervical fluid and position—in just a few minutes each day.  After the workshop, you’ll receive a helpful follow-up consultation with workshop instructor and certified professional midwife, Heather Pollock-Green.

Women with irregular cycles, breastfeeding mothers and menopausal women can all benefit from
learning how to observe and chart their daily fertility signs.  All women can benefit from having a better understanding of basic menstrual health.

The Fertility Awareness Method and the Natural Family Planning method differ only in how pregnancy is avoided when the methods are used for contraception.  The underlying principles and all other working guidelines of each method are exactly the same.
  • With FAM, some form of alternative contraception is used during the fertile period.
  • With NFP, pregnancy is avoided by completely abstaining from sexual activity during the fertile period.
