Speaker Bios

Karen Adamson MSN, WHNP-C
Karen is a board certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner specializing in gynecologic and reproductive healthcare for women of all ages. She has two teenagers and enjoys the diversity of Salida’s Wellness Community.  Karen will be leading a presentation for teens, "Creating your Reproductive Life Plan."
 
 
Jeane Rhodes
Jeane is a licensed professional counselor in the State of Colorado, current editor-in-chief for the Journal of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health (PPN) and adjunct faculty (online) for The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in their PPN program. Jeane worked in the foster care system for ten years in various capacities, including as a therapist for children in foster care and as executive director of a foster placement agency.  She has published a novel (The Birth of Hope) based on her experiences in the foster care system. The book also incorporates pre and perinatal psychology principals in this story of teen pregnancy in foster care. She has been active as a member and presenter at APPPAH Congresses since the early 90s and currently serves on the Board of Directors for APPPAH. She resides in Lakewood, Colorado, USA, with her husband, Larry, and a beautiful Golden Retriever named Beau. Jeane will be participating in the Roundtable Discussion on Teen Pregnancy.

Dr. Kim Nearpass, N.D.
Dr. Kimberly Nearpass is a Colorado native who graduated from Colorado College. After serving in the Peace Corps in Lesotho, Africa, raft guiding and ski bumming in Colorado and working as a naturalist guide in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, she began her Naturopathic coursework. She graduated in 2003 from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon. She is a family practitioner with expertise in naturopathic pediatric and women's health issues, including menopause, irregular menses, infertility, PMS, and overlapping endocrine problems such as thyroid and adrenal imbalance.  Dr. Nearpass is also certified professional of the Arvigo technique of Maya Abdominal Therapy.  She lives in Frisco with her husband and two children, and co-owns the Mountain-River Naturopathic Clinic and the Backcountry Herbal Apothecary.  Dr. Nearpass will be presenting The Pros and Cons of the HPV Vaccination.
 
 
MacKenzie Christy, Full Circle Birth Works
MacKenzie Christy has been a student of pre- and perinatal psychologies for the past 8 years.  She has studied extensively with Karlton Terry and team in birth trauma, regression therapies, and reprinting modalities to assist the birthing team, the postpartum mother, and the grown adult in examining the imprints, impacts and somatic response due to birth trauma.  She has recently been certified in the Birth of a New Earth curriculum, an educational and psychological approach to conscious sex education, conception, birth and postpartum.  MacKenzie offers this education as Full Circle Birth Works, a company offering education in the fields of conscious sex, conception, birth & passing.  MacKenzie will be participating in the presentation of Sex Education Curricula in Colorado and Beyond.

Ben Folman, Salida Vineyard Church
Hi, my name is Ben Folman. I'm the Lead Pastor at the Salida Vineyard Church and have been a pastor for 10 years. I love Jesus and know he cares about and speaks to the relevant issues that men and women face today. Ultimately, I believe Jesus wants every person to experience a rich and fulfilling life.  Ben will be participating in the Roundtable Discussion on Teen Pregnancy.
 
 
Laura Metz, L.AC.
Laura is a licensed acupuncturist and a nationally board certified diplomat of acupuncture.  She earned her Master’s of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Colorado School of TCM.  In addition to acupuncture, Laura is experienced in herbal medicine, nutritional counseling and has worked in the healthcare field for 14 years.  Laura will be presenting the program for teens and their families, "Balancing Hormones Naturally: Life Skills for our Daughters."
 
 
 
 
Lorene Wapotich, Her Feet on the Earth
Lorene is the founder, director, and lead instructor for Her Feet on the Earth. She is the author of the forthcoming book, Her Feet on the Earth: Creating Nature-based Rites of Passage for Girls, which shares the model she developed for using long-term, nature-based mentoring and community-supported wilderness rites of passage to enhance positive identity formation, connection to authentic self, and the development of resilience in pre-adolescent and adolescent girls. This is the model employed in and taught through Her Feet on the Earth programs.

Lorene holds a Bachelors Degree in Wilderness Leadership and Natural History Education and a Masters in Education. She has 20 years experience as a wilderness guide, naturalist, educator/mentor, and herbalist in the Wise Woman Tradition. She has extensive experience designing and leading a wide range of nature-based programs, including rites of passage. Lorene is a dynamic teacher who is passionate about connecting girls and women with nature and their inner power and wisdom.  Lorene will be presenting "Guiding your Son or Daughter's Coming of Age: Cultural Messages and Rites of Passage."

 
 
Duncan Forbes, Planned Parenthood
Duncan Forbes is the Education Program Manager for Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado Springs, CO. In this role, he coordinates a team of 3 to facilitate 5 distinct teen-pregnancy prevention and sexual health education programs. Last school year Duncan and his team facilitated almost 500 hours of programming to over 2,000 youth and adults in 9 different cities and towns throughout Southern Colorado mostly in partnership with various public, private, and charter schools as well as some youth development and adult-serving organizations. Duncan also serves on the Board of Directors of Pikes Peak Family Connections, a Colorado Springs non-profit whose mission is to eliminate child abuse and neglect in the Pikes Peak Region.  Duncan will be participating in the presentation of Sex Education Curricula in Colorado and Beyond.
